While the artist's 90-year-old grandmother was in the hospital, Pond visited her house in Douglaston, NY. He noticed this electric fan perched on an antique footstool in front of an antique bookcase. He liked the juxtaposition of the modern object with the antiques. His treatment of the fan and footstool is a humorous take on the classic still-life paintings of a fruit bowl on a table. The artist's animated line and vibrant colors make the fan and stool together look like an imaginary creature. He made an etching and several paintings that are variations of this image.
