The Other Chair

This print is titled, “The Other Chair”, because of the play between the positive areas (in cool blue) and the negative areas (in warm red) setting up an optical inversion. This was the artist’s first silkscreen print and convinced him that serigraphy was the best way to produce his multi-colored images in graphic form. Since serigraphy was not being taught in the graduate school at Pratt Institute at that time, he had to learn the printing technique by consulting commercial silkscreen printers and developing his own process through trial and error.  
For this print he used cut lacquer film stencils with overlapping edge registration. The stencil screens from this print were also used to create a poster for his MFA graduate thesis exhibition at Pratt Institute in the spring of 1966. This chair image has been revisited by the artist in numerous variations in both prints and paintings during his career.
