This print is part of the artist’s “Dental Office” series. The images came from the artist’s fascination with the objects he observed in the dentist’s office. This particular image was whimsical. It was printed in April of 1970 at the Tamarind Lithography Workshop in Los Angeles, CA, which was funded by the Ford Foundation and started in 1960 to train lithographers. In 1969 the artist was introduced to June Wayne, Director of the Tamarind Lithography Workshop by his art dealer, Martha Jackson. He was invited by Ms. Wayne to visit the work shop. At the time Tamarind was run by June Wayne, Clinton Adams and Garo Antreasian. Gene Sturman, an artist and friend of Clayton’s, was also one of the printers there. These prints of Pond’s were among the last made at Tamarind, Los Angeles, before the Ford Foundation support ended and the Tamarind workshop moved to the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, NM.
