The subject of this image was Tony’s Italian restaurant on Myrtle Avenue in Brooklyn, frequented by the artist and his friends during graduate school at Pratt Institute. The artist creates a juxtaposition between the perspective drawing that leads the viewer’s eye into the background and the use of bright colors to bring the eye right back into the foreground. The use of the electric, light blue color in the center background vignette of the restaurant kitchen enhances and brings forward a focal point that the perspective lines have already drawn the viewer toward. The artist deliberately plays with color to create surface tension and vibration.
Note: When the artist signed each print he misspelled the title as “Restraunt”. The artist is quick to admit he is not the world’s best speller and finds words of French derivation the most challenging. It may be one of the reasons he became an artist.
